Andrew and Polly are a familiar presence in Los Angeles things to do in the family music scene, and their popularity has been growing due in no small part to the podcast, “Ear Snacks,” that they launched last year. Each episode explores a different topic with impressive depth. It’s like a junior version of “This American Life.” The award-winning husband-and-wife duo have collected tunes from their show’s first season for their new CD, “Ear Snacks: Songs from the Podcast.”

On their podcast, Andrew and Polly ask their guests questions. Here, we turn the tables.

Often musicians are asked, “Which comes first, the words or the music?” So I wanted to ask which comes first, the podcast or the songs?

We have done a little bit of both this season, but most of the time we find a song’s inspiration during the making of an episode. After we settle on a theme, we design a series of questions for our kid participants and then everything else comes together – the interviews with experts, the skits and, yes, the songs.

Were there things you discovered over the course of making these podcasts?

Polly had no idea there were sundials on Mars until we interviewed Matt Kaplan of The Planetary Society and Planetary Radio (Episode 10: “Shadows”), and Andrew was surprised to learn that seahorses can have hundreds of babies – or more – and the daddy seahorse carries them (Episode 7: “Pairs”)!

Do you have plans for more “Ear Snacks” in the future?

Right now, we’re wrapping up production on the first season, which runs a total of 13 episodes.  We are excited to take a little break and figure out what’s next for “Ear Snacks” in Season 2!  We have started a couple of record concepts, including one about a dog and a cricket called “Frank & Bruno.” And, of course, we hope to do some more challenging and fun work for children’s television as well. In the meantime, we’ll be playing live here in Los Angeles things to do and looking for inspiration around every corner.

Andrew and Polly will perform at Books and Cookies (2309 Main St., Santa Monica; www.booksandcookiesla.com. $12) at 10 a.m. Oct. 8, McCabe’s Guitar Shop (3101 Pico Blvd. Santa Monica; www.mccabes.com. $10) at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 23 with guest Mista Cookie Jar, and Children’s Book World (10580½ W. Pico Blvd., West L.A.; www.childrensbookworld.com. Free) at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 29.
