The local duo Renee & Jeremy returns with a new album of old songs. A Little Love is their love letter to songs that they love, and songs that also make for delightful listening for the whole family.
This set of cover tunes include in an interesting array of pop/rock hits that spans the generations. The oldest track is Simon & Garfunkel’s 1966 hit “59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin’ Groovy),” while Yael Naim’s “New Soul,” (popularized in an Apple ad) is the newest number.
Several of the selections are naturals for family audiences: like the Monkees’ “Daydream Believer” and R.E.M’s “Shiny Happy People.” Others choices reveal the duo’s imaginative way of re-fashioning rock tunes for younger ears. Their version of Queen’s “You’re My Best Friend” glides along to a ukulele accompaniment. Similarly, the stripped-down “Yellow” re-makes the Coldplay hit into a wistful lullaby. The most inventive re-working, however, comes with the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ “Get It Away.” Who would have thunk that this raucous funk-rock tune could be transformed into a sweet ballad?
Renee & Jeremy have created a cool and comfy covers album that is a joy for all to hear.
