$15, www.cdbaby.com/erinwurtemberg
Erin Wurtemberg is a musician and a mom, and both play a big role in her new album, Beautiful Day. The disc serves a musical thank you that benefits Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles. It was at that hospital around seven years ago that doctors and nurses helped save Wurtemberg’s newborn daughter’s life, and the Los Angeles-based musician aptly describes this album as being “truly a labor of love.”
Despite its serious origins, the disc itself is filled with many light-hearted moments. Wurtemberg displays a quirky sense of humor on originals like “Pumpkin Pie,” “Lollipop,” and “Mrs. McClure,” a tale about a strange teacher who’s “got chickens in her TV room!” While she tackles several traditional tunes here (like “She’ll Be Comin’,” “Miss Mary Mack,” “Wee Willie Winky” and “Row Your Boat”), she has updated the lyrics to keep the songs sounding fresh.
Wurtemberg also touches on the reason behind this album. The title track stands as a call to appreciate what life has to offer, while “Baby, I’ll Hold You,” addresses the miracle and blessing of parenthood. Beautiful Day comes filled with lively, heartfelt music.
