French Toast Forgets His Lunch Board Game; $20; Ages 3 and up; available at www.fatbraintoys.com
Playing board games with my 5-year-old can be frustrating because, quite frankly, she’s a cheater. I won’t be the parent who lets her child win every time, and if she “places” the die rather than rolling it properly, or moves her game piece an extra space or two, I will call her out on it. This game teaches preschoolers the basics of board game etiquette: taking turns, rolling the die and moving a game piece around a wonderfully illustrated board. The object of the game is to help French Toast, who forgot his lunch, collect food items by filling up a lunch box-shaped card with matching tiles. The player who gets three tiles in a row on his card wins. The game is a snap to learn, game pieces and die are big and sturdy for little hands and no reading is necessary. Best of all, the game moves quickly, so we can play enough rounds that my daughter wins some of the time, fair and square.
