Love the Mediterranean? You can have a Greek experience at the start of September and an Italian one at month’s end. The Greek Festival is back at the new Cultural Center at the Saint Sophia Cathedral Sept. 7-9. Friday is the dance-filled free Zorba Night, and Greek merriment continues through the weekend.
The 11th annual Galbani Cheese Italian Feast of San Gennaro lets everyone be Italian Sept. 28-30. Located behind the Jimmy Kimmel Live Theater in Hollywood, this lively street party, which benefits the San Gennaro Foundation, offers a feast of Italian music and food along with plenty of rides and games.
One of the best, and most appropriate, places to celebrate Mexican Independence Day is on historic Olvera Street. During the weekend of Sept. 15-16, the Fiestas Patrias fills the El Pueblo Historic Monument area with entertainment, cultural activities and food.
The Aquarium of the Pacific has its own way to celebrate Latino Heritage Month. Its annual Baja Splash Cultural Festival Sept. 29-30 features dance performances from countries like Mexico, El Salvador and Panama, Mariachi music and other Latino sounds, Latin cuisine, and creatures native to the Baja region. The weekend before this festival (Sept. 22-23), the Aquarium hosts Moompetam. Now in its eighth year, this event honors Native American culture with a lineup including storytelling, music, dance and craft demonstrations.
If you’re curious about Thai culture, circle Sept. 16 on your calendar so you’ll remember the 20th annual Thai Cultural Day taking place at Barnsdall Art Park. Enjoy traditional Thai music and dance, watch exquisite fruit and vegetable carving demonstrations or impressive kickboxing performances, plus children’s folk games, a costume contest and other Thai-themed activities.
