Interested in taking photos for L.A. Parent? Here’s what you need to know:
• What we’re looking for: We primarily use freelance photographers for the cover of our monthly print publication. We’re also open to using freelance photos to illustrate features, but that happens less often.
• Compensation: We compensate cover photographers with a ¼-page ad (an approximately $1,400 value) for their business in the same or a future issue of the magazine. Cover photographers are credited on our Table Of Contents page. We do not pay for photos used with feature articles or online, but the photographer receives a photo credit.
• Cover photo specs: We’re looking for striking photos of children in action – up-close, happy and engaged. If the child isn’t making direct eye contact with the camera, there needs to be something else about the photo that draws the viewer in. Show us a spark, a mood, peace or joy. Make us say “Awwww” or “Wow!” Remind us why we love being parents.
Click here … then click the “Archive” file folder at top left for examples of what we’re talking about.
Beyond that, there are some technical details. Photos must be in digital format, with a resolution of at least 300 dpi and at least 8 inches wide. Cover photos must be vertical. We prefer no more than three people in the frame, and often work with just one.
Don’t frame the shot so tightly that there is no room for our logo. Avoid busy backgrounds, busy clothing on your models, and logos (Mickey Mouse, the Nike swish, etc.) anywhere in the frame. You’ll need a completed model release form (we’ll send you the form) for everyone appearing in the photo.
• To Join the Roster: Each month, several months ahead of our issue date, we email out ideas about what we would like in a cover photo (i.e., a child dressed up for winter, an outdoor shot for spring, a back-to-school shot or a Halloween costume), along with a deadline. All photos submitted by the deadline will be considered. The best will make the cover, and the photographer will be compensated with an ad.
If you’re interested in trying your hand as a cover photographer, email Editor Christina Elston, Christina.Elston@LAParent.com with the subject line “Photographer.” Attach some of your photos or (even better) include a link to your online portfolio. We will add you to the roster.
