By Zen Studios (www.zenpinball.com) for iOS, Android, Xbox 360, PS3 and 3DS; Rated E, Ages 8+
If you’re of a certain age, you may remember an era when pinball machines ruled the arcades like mighty dinosaurs, never noticing the little videogames scurrying around at their feet that would eventually cause their extinction.
Now, as much as I love videogames, there are still days I miss flippers and silver balls and the joys of ringing bells. Fortunately Zen Studios shares this passion and has brought pinball into the modern age with Zen Pinball and Zen Pinball 2. Each comes with a free table and more tables (many of them based on Marvel Comics superheroes) are available at $2.99 each, and once you start playing, you’re going to want to get them all.
The game sports a physics engine that makes the ball bounce around realistically, and all the action of classic pinball machines is here. More than that, Zen Pinball actually expands on the game, offering things like mini-games, secondary pinball tables and incredible animations that would be impossible on a real pinball machine.
During one mission on the Captain America table, for example, 3D models of Captain America and the Red Skull jump over gaps in the table and trade punches as you try to help Cap by hitting as many bumpers as you can. If you love pinball, want to teach your kids to love pinball, or just love great games, you owe it to yourself to download one of the Zen Pinball games.
