The Great Escape: Hollywood Edition

You’ve probably heard friends talking about the new Escape Room craze where you and a handful of fellow sleuths are locked in a room, left to your own devices to crack codes, riddles and puzzles to escape the room in one hour or less. I experienced my first Escape Room a couple months ago, and much like my childhood friend, Nancy Drew, I’ve become hooked on solving mysteries and jump at any opportunity to test my smarts. There aren’t a lot of Los Angeles attractions for adults that bring out the kid, the brainiac and scaredy cat in you, all at...

Mystery Solved! If it weren’t for those meddling kids…

I just experienced the most spectacular date night out with friends unique to all the fun things to do in LA, but unfortunately, I can’t tell you about it. Well, that’s not entirely true. I can tell you a little. Last month, my husband and I planned a “triple” date with friends and headed to the Westside to partake in Escape Key Entertainment’s interactive, live-action game. Up to six people are locked in a room and left to find clues and solve riddles to “escape” within 60 minutes. (Insider tip: The idea of being locked in a room may be...

LA Opera for All Ages

I used to think opera only appealed to an older audience. But my daughter, who is 10, has made me think otherwise. After participating in L.A. Opera’s summer camp two years ago, she expressed interest in seeing an opera performance at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. We obliged – with hesitation, I admit, unsure whether we could all sit through it – and were delighted to experience the opera through Avery’s eyes. We marveled at the beauty of this classic art form, the talent of the performers and the attention to detail in the sets, props and costumes. We’ve been to...

A Film About Family and Parenting

I had the pleasure of screening a new documentary by two talented Australian filmmakers about four kids and their families. The film showcased each child’s unique challenges and triumphs. There’s Gus, whose obsession with wrestling and his practice of his rough-and-tough techniques on his younger sister has his parents concerned; Ebony, who feels the pressure of an impending audition for a slot at a performing arts school; Graham, who struggles to read and yearns to make new friends at a new school in a new country; and Matt, who has philosophical differences with his mother regarding their church and religion....

Play Like a Ninja

LEGOLAND California Resort’s newest addition, NINJAGO World, opens May 5. Guests enter NINJAGO World, based on the popular Asian-inspired franchise, through a tall arch to begin their “ninja training.” LEGO building stations and other activities that test reflexes, balance and agility prep visitors for the park’s newest attraction, NINJAGO The Ride. The interactive 4D experience uses sensory technology, allowing ninjas-in-training to use their new skills by moving, flailing and waving their hands to blast animated fireballs, lightning, shockwaves and ice as they earn points. It’s a great upper-body workout, and if you’re competitive like me, you’ll want to ride it...

L.A. Parent is Looking for Amazing Moms

We had such fun last year with our Amazing Mom Makeover that we’ve decided to make it an annual tradition. Our motives are pretty selfish. We just love hearing about all these fantastic people who are mothering families all over L.A. And our 2015 Amazing Mom, Holly Carson, inspired us with her tireless support of her husband, Wil, during his battle with cancer – which began just weeks after their second child was born. Now it’s time for you to share your story of motherhood. Use the form below to tell us about your proudest, most challenging, most heartwarming – or...

Local Center Wins Grant For Disaster Distress Helpline

Didi Hirsch Mental Health Services’ Suicide Prevention Center, one of only three in the U.S. with 24-hour English- and Spanish-speaking crisis counselors, won a highly competitive federal grant to continue operating the national Disaster Distress Helpline. The free, confidential helpline provides 24-hour crisis support services for people struggling emotionally because of natural or man-made disasters, including earthquakes, wildfires, floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, severe storms, drought and incidents of mass violence. The Dec. 2 shootings in San Bernardino that left 14 people dead and more than 20 injured is an example of a man-made disaster. “After tragedies like the mass shooting in...
