If you’ve seen “Get Organized with The Home Edit” on Netflix, or listened to the “Best Friend Energy” podcast, you’re surely ready to see hosts Clea Shearer and Joanna Teplin in person. So grab your bins, labels and best friends, because the duo is hitting the road on their “Summer of Fun Tour,” bringing their infectious enthusiasm and organizational skills around the country, including a stop in Los Angeles on July 13.
We had a chance to chat with Clea and Joanna about their eight-city tour. Here’s what they shared about staying organized, summer travel tips and what we can expect at a live show.
The ‘Summer of Fun Tour’ is kicking off. What can ticket holders look forward to?
Each show will feature what we (Clea and Joanna) do best: candid conversation, plenty of laughs, and deep dives on life, parenting, pop-culture, business and myriad organization solutions. Plus, we’ll have some special guests at each show (more to come soon on that).
When you visit L.A., what are your favorite things to do/places to visit?
Clea: Disneyland is a must on both of our lists. For me, I like to shop and eat. A few of my favorite places are Nobu, Mozza, and Katsuya. Since my family is still there, we’ll sometimes go to a concert at the Hollywood Bowl.
Joanna: Disneyland, yes! For me, too!
Let’s talk summer travel. When you travel with your kids, what are your best family travel tips?
Clea: Make sure your kids’ electronics are fully charged and fill their backpacks with snacks so you can enjoy champagne.
Joanna: Organize the car to accommodate any and all potential situations. For myself and the kids, that’s road trip games so no one gets bored.
As professional organizers, how do you help your own families stay organized, especially in the summer when everyone’s at home more?
Clea: Create “drop zones” in every room of your home, so things don’t wind up where they shouldn’t. And always add a label.
Joanna: Keep them out of the house! Marlowe and Miles are currently at camp and having the best time. Other than that, label everything so there are no excuses.
What are your favorite things to do with your families during the summer?
Clea: We have been going down to our beach house a lot this summer, and I have been really enjoying sitting in a beach chair—touching as little sand as humanly possible—with a glass of champagne, reading on my kindle and watching my kids enjoy the ocean. I can’t relate!
You have a lot going on, between the tour, recording your podcast, helping people stay organized through “The Home Edit,” and the upcoming reboot of “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition!” How are you staying organized in your own lives?
Joanna: I live and breathe by my calendar and ensure everyone has visibility into what I am doing—I even put my morning workouts on there. Nothing is too small to put on your calendar.
Clea: I have the systems in my house that keep me sane but more importantly, my husband, John.
In your podcast “Best Friend Energy,” we know you usually end with a segment called “5 Minutes for Hugs.” We’d like to do something like that too, with some fun, quick-answer questions, so our readers can get to know you both a little better. Here we go:
What is your favorite summer fruit?
Clea: Grapes, a form of champagne. Does that count?
Joanna: Clementines.
Would you rather go on an adventure vacation or a leisure vacation?
Both: Leisurely vacation.
Joanna: I prefer to be horizontal if I can.
Do you prefer early mornings or late nights?
Joanna: Early mornings; working out in the morning helps me start my day right.
Clea: Late nights, preferably with a good TV show and glass of champagne.
What are your summer BBQ essentials?
Both: Our husbands and bug spray.
What are you most looking forward to about “The Summer of Fun Tour”?
Both: We are excited about the opportunity to finally connect, in person, with our friends and fans. It’s our first-ever live tour, and we can’t wait to leave behind the chaos of the past few years and hit the road. We are excited to mingle with everyone, answer all your questions and share our expertise in organizing.
