In mid-July, the city of Downey celebrated the grand opening of Brookshire Park. Picnic tables, playgrounds, a walking trail and happy children fill this two-acre attraction. A grant from the nonprofit First 5 LA’s Tot Parks and Trails program helped fund the park, and it was designed and constructed by LA Corps, an innovative job training program for at-risk young adults.

“Our City parks add value to our community and it’s exciting to know that our Downey youth and their families will be able to enjoy these new park amenities,” said Mayor Fernando Vasquez. “The new playground equipment and walking trail will not only help beautify and enhance the park, but will promote healthy physical activity, which goes hand-in-hand with the goal of our Stay Healthy Downey initiative.”

One in five L.A. County children is overweight or obese, and the Downey initiative and the First 5 LA program share a common goal of keeping kids active through play.

The park is located at 12520 Brookshire Ave., and you can learn more about the Stay Healthy Downey initiative HERE.
