The Violence Prevention Coalition of Greater Los Angeles and the Violence Policy Center in Washington, D.C. recently announced that the deadline for the second annual Tony Bourbon Youth Scholarship Video Contest will be extended one month to Aug. 1, 2016. The video contest, open to high school students in Los Angeles County, invites students to submit films/videos on the negative effects of gun violence on youth and the positive actions youth are taking to reduce it.

“In light of the increased national attention on the issue of gun violence, we want to give high-school youth in Los Angeles County a platform to share their experiences and offer solutions,” says Violence Prevention Coalition of Greater Los Angeles Associate Director Daniel Healy. “Our extended deadline provides youth who are now on summer break the opportunity to create an impactful video.”

Films/videos must be three minutes long or less. The winner will receive the Tony Borbon Youth Scholarship in the amount of $1,000, and the runner-up will receive $500. The winner will be honored at the Violence Prevention Coalition of Greater Los Angeles Angel of Peace Awards Gala Sept. 21.

The Scholarship is named after Tony Borbon, who helped establish the Violence Prevention Coalition of Greater Los Angeles as its first chairman in the 1990s. He was a firefighter and activist who dedicated his life to preventing violence by supporting his community and bringing people together for collective action.
