For family music fans, August comes packed with wonderful free concerts.
The Levitt Pavilions in Pasadena and Los Angeles’ MacArthur Park (www.levittla.org) are offering an impressive lineup of performers. Lucky Diaz and the Family Jam Band will play L.A. Aug. 6 and Pasadena Aug. 10. Jazzy Ash celebrates her new album “Swing Set” on Aug. 13 in MacArthur Park, which will also welcome Birdie’s Playhouse Aug. 27. Pasadena’s Levitt Pavilion, meanwhile, hosts the great Justin Roberts, out supporting his latest CD “Lemonade,” on Aug. 3.
The Getty (www.getty.edu) again presents its Garden Concerts For Kids series. This year’s all-star roster kicks off Aug. 5-6 with Secret Agent 23 Skidoo, whose “Infinity Plus One” disc won this year’s Grammy for Best Children’s Album. The following weekend features children’s music icon Dan Zanes, who will be joined by Haitian-American jazz vocalists Claudia and Pauline Jean – and maybe some surprise guests. Closing the series will be a bilingual show from long-time Zanes colleague Sonia De Los Santos, who shares her reinterpretations of classic American songs and her original tunes.
Grand Performances (www.grandperformances.org), at downtown L.A.’s California Plaza, has organized a unique program featuring four interpretations of Sergei Prokofiev’s classic work “Peter and The Wolf.” The series starts with the classic version July 30 and the story gets a funky jazz treatment Aug. 6. Lucky Diaz and his band present their version, entitled “Peter Y la Loba,” Aug. 13, and ¡Aparato! performs “Peter and the Wolf” in Spanglish the following week.
One more free show worth noting is Mista Cookie Jar’s visit to Children’s Book World (www.childrensbookworld.com) Aug. 12. He’s just playing a mini-concert, but with everything else on the schedule, this should be more than enough to wear out your family’s dancing shoes.
