Just 12 months ago, Yoobi, headquartered in El Segundo, launched its line of school, home and office supplies in all 1,800 Target stores. If you haven’t noticed the vibrant and colorful items in the school supplies aisle, you’re missing out. But Yoobi is more than just a school supplies brand; it values education and wants to give back to students and schools in need. The company motto is, “One for you. One for me,” and for every item purchased, Yoobi donates one to a classroom in the U.S. To date, more than 660,000 elementary students across the country have received school supplies thanks to Yoobi.

For the past six months, the company has been at work creating a space for the community, and recently announced the opening of its first retail store at the Westfield Santa Anita shopping mall in Arcadia.

“It was an incredible team effort,” says Ido Leffler, CEO and co-founder. “Everyone was part of the decision-making process for the store, including myself, my wife and kids. The goal of the store was very simple – make it fun.”

And fun it is. The store, which sells more than 450 items, 300 of which are available only at Yoobi Santa Anita, gives shoppers a chance to test products before purchasing, “doodle away” and leave a special message on a wall, and learn about “The Give.”

The store’s shelves are filled with bright notebooks, stationery, desk accessories, arts-and-crafts supplies, writing supplies, backpacks and cases. The space is designed to inspire creativity, get students excited and offer fun ideas for kids.

The store is near and dear to Leffler, and something he hopes will spark an interest in others. He wants shoppers to feel like they are making a difference – big or small – in the community. As a father, he believes it’s important to teach his kids about giving. “I’ve got three little girls, and I want them to be a part of their community and to feel like they are giving back themselves,” says Leffler. “For me, it’s about showing them and leading by example.”

Expect to see more Yoobi stores opening in the Los Angeles area. Meanwhile, the grand opening of the first Yoobi retail store at Santa Anita Mall takes place June 20, with a celebration in Center Court from 2 p.m.- 6p.m. including games, creative activities and goodies.
