Last year the newly renovated wooden rollercoaster, GhostRider, compelled me to drive to Buena Park for Knott’s Berry Farm’s 75th Anniversary celebration and the debut of its Ghost Town Alive! Experience. The interactive Wild West-themed improv show isn’t relegated to one stage. Instead, entering the town of Calico allows you to join a gang you choose and engage with the characters as if you and your kids are in a Back to the Future scene. You can interact with townspeople, visit the barber to get a custom mustache, meet horses in the stables, participate in the town election and help capture members of the notorious Mayfield Gang. The live entertainment continues with the explosive Wild West Stunt Show, high kickin’ Calico Saloon Show and knee-slapping comedy show.
Along with the return of Ghost Town Alive! the park debuted Snoopy’s Magnificent Magical Revue, a vaudeville-themed magic show starring the World’s Most Famous Beagle, Snoopy, and showcasing the mystifying and amazing magic of Magician Greg Wilson. The whole PEANUTS gang joins in the magical exploits and musical production numbers in this family-friendly show in the Charles M. Schulz Theatre.
This summer has also brought the return of the “Traveling Circus.” Set on the Calico Mine stage in Ghost Town, the stunts and acrobatics in “Circus of Wonders” features the trapeze, tightrope, trampoline and, of course, clowns. I also caught, on the Indian Trails stage, the Native American ceremonial dance display, which was just as exhilarating as acrobatics, yet felt sacred.
If the heat pulls you away from Knotts sooner than a day of shows in Calico, you can cool down next door at the newly expanded Soak City Waterpark, where six new slides and an all-new family raft ride just debuted.
Knott’s Berry Farm and Soak City Waterpark offer joint or separate season passes. You can also buy discounted tickets at Southern California Ralph’s grocery stores. To experience the fun, visit their website at www.knotts.com or call (714) 220-5200.
