The Smithsonian is home to nine important research centers and publishes Smithsonian magazine. Its 19 museums contain an unparalleled treasury of historic items and all have free admission. “Free” is central to another great thing about the Smithsonian – its annual Museum Day Live.

This event, taking place Sept. 24 this year and sponsored by Smithsonian magazine, gives people the opportunity to visit hundreds of museums across the country for free. Among those participating in Southern California are Autry Museum of the American West, the GRAMMY Museum at L.A. LIVE, the Japanese American National Museum, LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes, the International Printing Museum and the Zimmer Children’s Museum.

Choose wisely, because you can download a free-admission pass for two to only one museum. Go to www.smithsonianmag.com/museumday/museum-day-live-2016, peruse the list of participating museums, pick the one that interests you and print up your ticket. Then mark it in your calendar so you won’t forget about this gift of free culture.
