City Language Immersion Charter school (CLIC) recently received the 2015 Green Apple Day of Service Project of the Year award. It was presented in early November by the L.A. chapter of the US Green Building Council during its 11th annual Green Gala. For the past four years, USGBC-LA has provided local schools with mini grants that help to fund green campus initiatives. CLIC received a $1,000 grant for the 2015 Green Apple Day of Service.
CLIC is a constructivist elementary school, so participation in the Green Apple Day of Service was a perfect fit for this project-based learning environment. On Oct. 18, more than 40 students and parents from the CLIC community gathered together to “clean and green” their school. This year they built planter boxes for trees and native vegetation, painted drop-cloth canvas murals, ‘yarn bombed’ some of the trees, built a sand box and created teaching gardens.
