As you wait for your teen’s college acceptance letters, you’re probably also worrying about what their college decision means for your pocket book. Thank goodness for scholarship programs to help you bridge the gap. Simon Youth Foundation(SYF) is continuing its annual giving to students earmarking over $1 million for scholarships nationwide.
Simon Youth Foundation Community Scholarships are for students graduating in the class of 2016 and living within 50 miles of Del Amo Fashion Center in Torrance, The Shops at Montebello in Monterey Park and Camarillo Premium Outlets in Camarillo. Recipients will receive up to $1,500 to enroll in an accredited college, university, vocational or technical school. Students in Orange County are also eligible for a regional award called an “Award of Excellence” worth $10,000, split in $2,500 increments up to four years.
The scholarships are awarded based on financial need, academic performance, leadership skills and participation in school and community activities. First-generation college students will be given special consideration. Applications are due March 1, 2016 and recipients will be notified in May.
SYF is a national non-profit that provides educational opportunities for at-risk high school students partnering with public school districts to open dropout recovery academies inside Simon, Mills, or Premium Outlet malls. The scholarships for graduating seniors helped more than 300 students nationwide last year. “The cost of college continues to rise, and SYF is proud to partner with Del Amo Fashion Center, The Shops at Montebello and Camarillo Premium Outlets to award scholarships that will remove some of the financial obstacles that could otherwise prevent a student from achieving the dream of a college education,” said Michael Durnil, SYF President and CEO.
