The 2015 edition of Your Child With Special Needs — a free magazine packed with resources, advice and informative articles to help kids and their families through every stage of life — is now available. You can find it around town at schools and businesses that serve the special-needs community, and it isn’t easy to miss. It features actor RJ Mitte (from TV’s “Breaking Bad”) on the cover!
The magazine has been honored with Parenting Media Association General Excellence awards two years in a row, and this year’s edition carries on that tradition. It includes articles about safety for kids with special needs, mental health issues in parents raising these special children, and faith-based communities reaching out to these families. There is also an article to help parents begin preparing – right away – for their child’s transition to adulthood.
There is an interview with RJ Mitte and his mom, detailing how they overcame the challenges posed by RJ’s cerebral palsy. Henry Winkler discusses his books for kids with dyslexia, and we learn about a device doctors believe might help some children who are born deaf. We also include an update on the Special Olympics World Games, coming to L.A. this summer, and a free program for teachers who want to bring typical and special-needs kids together for a day of play. It features some exciting giveaways, and news about a Temple Grandin appearance in May. We wrap the book up with our listing of resources, which includes local services ranging from enrichment programs to treatment and therapy, and everything in between.

Of course, we know that once a year isn’t often enough to reach out to our families with special needs, so every month we send out “Your Child With Special Needs Monthly,” a free email newsletter that features informative articles and news about upcoming fundraisers, lectures, support groups and fun family events of interest to the special-needs community.
It’s easy to subscribe. Click here, fill in your email address and first and last name, and be sure to check the box that says “Your Child With Special Needs Monthly.” (You can sign up for our weekly e-newsletter there as well.) You will begin receiving our the newsletter on the first of each month. We promise it’s worth your while. (It was honored with a Parenting Media Association Gold award in 2014.)
We hope you enjoy these special members of the L.A. Parent family.
