Father’s Day is right around the corner, and while we do try to celebrate our parents in small ways throughout the year, the holiday is always a nice opportunity to put Dad on a pedestal. Whether you are looking for a scheduled activity out in the city or just inspiration, here’s our list of event ideas to help you honor Dad.
Father’s Day Frame Making
On June 10, local nonprofit Piece by Piece is hosting an art exhibit and sale along with a Father’s Day frame making event. If Dad and the kids are crafty, this is a great way to celebrate. Or, if you’re not feeling so crafty, spend the day simply admiring art.
Giants Versus Dodgers
One of my favorite ways to celebrate my dad is to go to a Dodgers game, because there’s nothing quite like enjoying a hot dog and cotton candy with the family, all while cheering on our favorite team with tons of other fans. The Giants play the Dodgers at home all of Father’s Day weekend, and you can get your seats now.
Daddy Daughter Dinner and Dance
Looking for a night out with dad? Chris Aaron & the Girls are hosting a Daddy Daughter Dinner and Dance on Friday, June 16. The event includes raffles, photos, food, a live band and dancing. General admission is $70.
Live Music at LACMA
If Dad loves a live music show, consider heading to LACMA on Father’s Day weekend. June 16 is Jazz at LACMA night, which runs from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. And on Saturday, June 17, festivities begin at 5 p.m. with Latin Sounds at LACMA. Pack a picnic dinner, or get a restaurant reservation nearby, and make a whole night of it. LACMA music events are free, and the energy is always festive and fun.
Father’s Day Soundbath
Start Father’s Day bright and early with Sunrise Community’s Father’s Day Soundbath. This event is perfect for the parent who rises early and would enjoy either a morning to himself, or with the whole family. For 30 minutes, sit at the beach, relax and unwind.
Go Geocaching
This is great activity to get the whole family outside, and it requires no reservations — just a sense of adventure. Geocaching is a worldwide treasure hunt that utilizes GPS and allows you to hide and seek geocaches with participants across the globe. No matter where you are, there are geocaches nearby to find. Pick a place in town, say, Elysian Park, Downtown L.A. or Pasadena, and use the app and your detective mind to find hidden geocaches. Add a picnic to the adventure and you’ve got a great Father’s Day plan.
Storytelling in Burbank
Listening to stories about fatherhood might be the perfect way to celebrate Father’s Day. On June 11, Manectodes 2023 takes place at the Colony Theater in Burbank. Enjoy a collection of funny and meaningful stories about fatherhood from a fantastic cast of writers and storytellers. Musical guest Bishop will start the night off. Tickets range from $25 to $100, with proceeds benefitting the Family Service Agency of Burbank.
Pasadena Chalk Festival
Looking for some fun in the sun? On June 17 or 18, head to the Pasadena Chalk Festival. Enjoy 200 chalk murals, plus an art gallery, silent auction, concessions and a beer garden. This event is open and free to the public. It’s in a new location this year, The Plaza at the Pasadena Convention Center. To add some fancy to your day in Pasadena, book a table for a steak dinner at the local Ruth’s Chris Steak House.
Father’s Day Ride 2023
Is your dad into cars? Consider going for a drive around El Segundo in a classic car driven by a knowledgeable and experienced docent from the Automobile Driving Museum, all part of the 2023 Father’s Day Ride. For those who wish to partake, local beer tasting will be available, too. Tickets range from $5 to $15.
Backyard BBQ With Dad
Looking for a more DIY activity? Our very own Ron Epstein shared his preferred way to celebrate the holiday: “My favorite thing on Father’s Day is to have our girls come over to hang by the pool and barbecue, with the Dodger game on the radio in the background.” If your Dad is anything like Ron, a low-key backyard gathering or day at the beach is just right…and no reservations are needed.
