Planning a kid’s birthday party can be both exciting and overwhelming. Should you invite your child’s whole class? Which extended family members should you invite? Should there be a theme? What food to serve…the list goes on.
But to make the celebration unforgettable, focusing on the following elements can make sure that the kid whose birthday you’re celebrating has the time of their life, that guests of all ages enjoy themselves and that you can still enjoy the day without getting too stressed.
Step 1: Pick your theme
The first step in planning an amazing birthday party is selecting a theme that resonates with the birthday child. Whether they are fascinated by dinosaurs, enchanted by fairies or obsessed with superheroes, a well-chosen theme will set the tone for the entire event.
Once the theme has been selected, try to bring every element of the party into it. For example, if the theme is “under the sea,” make sure all décor carries a water or sea life theme, that desserts pay homage to the theme and that any goody bags have something tied back to the celebration.
Step 2: Get creative with the food
While the bowling alley parties that we grew up with that served pizza, cake and soda may have been fun, we know we can do better! Serve food that can tie into the theme you’ve landed on — and it doesn’t have to be kitschy or cheesy. For example, having little tea sandwiches for a princess-themed party is fun for all participants, whereas pink cupcakes might not be a hit for every single guest.
Step 3: Be mindful of dietary restrictions
While sugary treats are often a staple at parties, not everyone gives their kids sugar (or can eat the dairy or eggs that are often in desserts). Ask about any restrictions in advance so you can make sure there is food everyone can enjoy without feeling left out.
Step 4: Organize photo moments
Even if you don’t post your child on social media, you want to have photos that you can treasure in the future. Décor is key to making a party come to life — and can be as simple as banners and balloons or as built-out as creating your own bayou and New Orleans experience (which is something that I just created for a quinceañera)! And don’t just set up a nice backdrop; take time to get the photos.
Step 5: Make goody bags
Goody bags are a great way to thank guests for coming. Step them up a notch by including a practical item or activity. A small toy related to the theme, stickers and a healthy snack can be a big hit.
Step 6: Provide entertainment or an activity
Entertainment is crucial for keeping kids engaged and happy — and it also helps the parents have some adult time. There are countless options for activities at kids’ parties, and what you plan depends on your child’s age and interests. These could range from having their favorite characters attend and put on a show, making pizzas together, watching a magician, going swimming and much more.
Step 7: Get extra help so you can be present at the party
Hosting a party involves a lot of moving pieces, so don’t hesitate to enlist help. Hiring a helper or babysitter can take some of the pressure off you and allow you to enjoy the party as well. This is especially helpful for set-up and breakdown after the party ends.
It goes without saying that throwing a great party for kids takes a lot of planning and can create stress, but if you go step-by-step, you can make it something amazing that everyone will love!
