The opening weekend holds the Tanabata Festival, which offers martial arts demonstrations, live performances and cultural exhibits such as cultural exhibits such as bonsai, calligraphy, and Ikebana. Join Aki the Akita and pals for a Aki’s Pup Up Party on Sunday the 11th, which also features The Grand Parade (with taiko drums, Haneto dancers and a Nebuta float) starting at 4 p.m. Aug. 17’s festivities starts with the Rubik’s Cube Open (8 a.m.), while hot dog-eating champion Joey Chestnut and YouTube sensation Matt Stonie will compete in the World Gyoza Eating Championship (2 p.m.) on Aug. 17.
