noon-midnight Sat., noon-6 p.m. Sun. Sept. 7-Nov. 2. Oktoberfest is such a big deal in Big Bear that it begins in Sept. and ends in Nov. Celebrating its 49th year, this lively annual Bavarian-style celebration boasts a variety of amusing competitions and contests (like log sawing and stein holding), live bands straight from Germany, traditional German dancing and the semi-traditional Chicken Dance. Kids can participate in boot holding and cup spiel contests and, on Oct. 28, there’s a German Spooktacular with a Halloween costume contest. The Kinder Garten play area contains a bounce house, Samson The Mechanical Bull, carnival game booths and other children’s activities like face painting and balloon art. Fest-goers can also try a variety of German food, with the bratwurst and knockwurst brought in from a German butcher in L.A. and fresh apple strudel as well as pretzels are delivered weekly from a German bakery in Downey! And yes, there will be plenty of German brews too.
