Families can explore how stepwells from as early as the fifth century have been used to store monsoonal rains for communities across India before imagining a new water-storage system for your neighborhood. One giant pool? Dozens of underground wells? Personal rain catchers? It’s up to you! Children ages 6 and older are invited to bring their designs to life using a variety of art materials. This workshop relates to the current Fowler exhibit, “India’s Subterranean Stepwells: Photographs by Victoria Lautman.” Also, from 2-3 p.m. today, dancers Aakansha Maheshwari and Malini Taneja will present a 20-minute, high-energy dance performance of the Indian folk dance style known as Kalbelia, followed by a participatory workshop where audience members can learn popular moves of the Kalbelia tribe. While not strictly an all-ages event, it may also be of interest to families too.
