Now 121 years old, this edition of this Southern California tradition provides a lively way to honor the Chinese New Year. The colorful procession offers nearly two dozen floats, numerous marching bands, entertainers, cultural groups, and local dignitaries. The Red packets of money (Lai see or Hung bao), firecrackers and, of course, the lion and dragon procession are part of the fun too. The event, which emphasizes ethnic diversity as well as Chinese culture, offers a memorable experience to Angelenos of all ages and ethnicities. Spectators can view the parade, which proceeds through L.A.’s Chinatown (from Hill at Ord to Broadway at Cesar Chavez), for free or by buying a ticket for grandstand seating. Street closures start at 10 a.m. with the parade commencing at 1 p.m.
