8 p.m. March 14, 2 p.m. March 15. With the new baseball season just a few weeks ahead, the Santa Monica Playhouse invites you to look back at baseball’s past. Eddie Frierson’s highly-regarded one-man show, “Matty,” explores the extraordinary life of the legendary hall-of-fame pitcher Christy Mathewson. A star pitcher for the New York Giants from 1900-1916, Mathewson was more than just a baseball idol. He was a college educated man (which was rare for a baseball player then) who wrote books, toured in vaudeville, made a movie, and was a war hero. Frierson, who played baseball at UCLA and coached it at Santa Monica High School, brings Mathewson’s multi-faceted life vibrantly alive on stage.
