Today’s events honor Nick Gabaldón, who is recognized as the first documented surfer of color. The celebration begins at 9 a.m. with a Welcome Ceremony at Bay Street Beach & Memorial Paddle Out for Nick. From 10 a.m.-1 p.m. there will be beach explorations and cleanup as well as a free surf lessons. Surfers, however, must register in advance (find details on the event’s web page). A raffle on the beach will happen at 12:30 p.m. From 1-5 p.m., the Aquarium will have free admission. A children’s story time is set for 2 p.m., which will be followed by a live animal presentation. The day’s events offer a terrific opportunity for folks to increase their understanding of Southern California’s cultural, historical and natural heritage.
