“Son of the Wind” is a kathak dance drama that follows the trials and adventures of Hanuman as he helps rescue the princess Sita from the clutches of Ravan, King of Lanka. Under the artistic direction of Seibi Lee, Rachna Nivas and Rina Mehta, this all-female production brings a contemporary spin to India’s ancient epic, the Ramayana. Making its L.A. premiere, “Son of the Wind” brings together the world’s leading Kathak artists to charter new directions in this classical Indian dance style. With women in the role of male warriors, this production challenges modern day perceptions of Kathak dance as well as a history that typically showcased only male dancers. Recommended for tweens and older.
