The free, public event, now in its 11th year, offers presentations and hands-on demonstrations for budding scientists of all ages. As part of UCLA’s year-long centennial celebration, “Exploring Your Universe” has expanded to include 60 activities; faculty, graduate students and undergraduates – from more than 20 UCLA departments and organizations, will lead visitors through an array of experiments, covering subjects ranging from astronomy and geology to genetics and physics. “Explorations” will include being able to touch meteorites, get DNA from strawberries, launch rockets, make lava lamps, examine our sun through solar telescopes, create a tornado in a bottle, and learn about missions to Mars. At noon, actor Mayim Bialik (“The Big Bang Theory”) will receive the 3rd annual Science and Education Pioneer Award, presented by the UCLA College division of physical sciences, in recognition of Bialik’s role as a tireless communicator in support of scientific inquiry and discovery.
