The popular California coastal town, Pismo Beach, celebrates 75 years as an incorporated city. However, this classic beach destination has a rich history traveling back over 9,000 years. The Chumash were Pismo Beach’s original residents and thrived as a maritime culture, cultivating food from the ocean and resources along the coast. The Chumash used to caulk their canoes using a tar-like substance from the beach. They called this black resin “pis mu,” and the name stuck.  

Today, California residents near and far enjoy Pismo Beach’s white sand beaches, iconic surfing spots, historic pier, and classic downtown. To celebrate 75 years as an incorporated city, Pismo Beach encourages visitors of all ages to experience all that the friendly coastal city has to offer. Adults can enjoy local winetasting from SLO Coast Wineries, currently offering their rosé release, while kids and adults alike can have fun horseback riding, surfing, shopping, or soaking up the sun for a relaxing day at the beach.
