August’s Book Corner gets us in that back-to-school spirit with books that inspire health and learning. This month we have two books on history, the history of food and history of inventions, two books on beloved rhymes, and an ultimate health guide for kids to keep them healthy during the school year and beyond.
The Ultimate Kids’ Guide to Being Super Healthy
By Nina L. Shapiro, MD and illustrated by Nicole Grimes
As director of Pediatric Ear, Nose, and Throat Surgery at Mattel Children’s Hospital UCLA, Dr. Nina Shapiro took care of children for almost 25 years, so she knows a thing or two about getting kids to understand how the body works and what it means to be healthy. In her new book written for elementary school age kids, “The Ultimate Guide to Being Super Healthy,” tackles tough concepts like nutrition, stress, vaccines and hygiene with age-appropriate explanations. Interactive experiments and fun illustrations answer children’s questions about their bodies and health like, “why can’t we have cookies for dinner?” with science-based answers. The book also includes healthy tips, like how to limit screen time. Ages 6-10.
History is Delicious
By Joshua Lurie and drawn by Laura Foy
L.A. food journalist and Food GPS founder Joshua Lurie takes young readers on a culinary adventure through dishes, ingredients and cultural traditions from around the world. Learn about table settings in Ethiopia, indigenous American ingredients, noodles from around the world and more in this colorful new book. “History is Delicious” includes recipes, “must try” dishes, dining “do’s and don’ts” and, of course, the history behind each cuisine. Ages 8-14.
History is Inventive
By Brooke Knight and drawn by Sophy Smith
California-born and L.A.-based Brooke Knight is the co-founder of Honest History, a history magazine for kids ages 6-12. In her new book, “History Is Inventive,” Knight explores different inventions, from the printing press to Wi-Fi to cosmetics, and famous inventors who changed the world, through colorful illustrations and fun, easy-to-navigate design. Each section ends with thought-provoking questions for curious kids ages 8-14.
Happy and You Know It!
From INDESTRUCTIBLES, illustrated by Vanja Kragulj
If you have a baby, you probably already know about the popular INDESTRUCTIBLES series, thin paperlike books that no matter how hard a baby might rip, bite or tear at it—wont break! These books are even washable; just throw them in the dishwasher. Little readers can get their hands on two new additions, which join the series. Sing, clap and stomp along to “Happy And You Know It,” which introduces young readers to the beloved song. Ages 0 and up.
This Little Piggy
From INDESTRUCTIBLES, illustrated by Vanja Kragulj
The bright and colorful illustrations in “This Little Piggy” will delight babies as much as the classic children’s rhyme itself. Ages 0 and up.
