Dara Segbefia believes all teachers deserve to relax in style.

As founder and lead principal designer of the L.A.-based interior design firm The Zen Experience Interior Design, Segbefia has been developing teacher lounges throughout Los Angeles with a focus on enhancing mental health, building community and increasing overall well-being for teachers and staff. Her most recent designs include the KIPP Compton Community School’s teacher lounge renovation and a lounge design at KIPP Corazón Academy that was inspired by the teachers’ dreams of visiting Tulum, Mexico.

Segbefia believes that every school, regardless of its location or demographics, should include designs that serve as a kind of oasis — for meetings, eating, communing and even naps — and she hopes her work will help ease the extreme burnout many teachers say they experience.

The Tulum-inspired lounge, for instance, seems perfect for meditating. To this Zen-inspired space, Segbefia incorporated neutral tones, organic materials and biophilic design, which includes elements — such as plants, lighting and materials — that echo the natural world.
