Born prematurely at 28 weeks and weighing little more than 2 pounds, Connor Merrihew spent his first 10 weeks in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at UCLA. Now a senior at Harvard-Westlake School, the L.A. teen is the founder and CEO of Team Preemie, which supports preterm babies and families.
“During the early days of the COVID pandemic, I looked at my baby pictures from the NICU, and I was startled to see how frighteningly small and fragile I was,” Merrihew recalls. “Thankfully, my community had excellent medical resources and an incredible team of doctors, nurses and staff to help me survive. But I also realized that many preemies are not as fortunate, and that inspired me to launch Team Preemie.”
A 501(c)(3) nonprofit, Team Preemie sends care packages called Preemie Packets to NICUs across the country to help stimulate preemie development and bonding with parents. The team also includes notes of gratitude to hospital staff members for their tireless work and dedication.

In addition, Team Preemie is collaborating with a global nonprofit to help fund low-cost portable incubators for Sudan, a war-torn country in desperate need of warming incubators for preemies. And the nonprofit is connecting with NICUs in the southern U.S. states to help support specialized neonatal transport teams in under-resourced communities. These mobile teams — whether by land or air — provide emergency transport of premature babies to NICUs for critical care, as “a preemie’s success is driven by the strength and determination of a supportive team,” Merrihew says.
The fall and winter seasons are important for Team Preemie’s fundraising efforts, Merrihew explains, noting that September was NICU Awareness Month, October was Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month and November is Prematurity Awareness Month. “By sharing these national awareness months with family and friends, we find so many people have been impacted by similar experiences and then want to help,” he says.
Word of mouth, in-person gatherings, emails and blogs have helped the nonprofit fundraise consistently. Volunteers can also help through the Team Preemie Ambassador Program.
“My goal is to have a continuous and lasting impact within the preemie community, both locally and globally — and to thank all those who help,” says Merrihew, who served as an L.A. Parent editorial intern this summer.
