National Hispanic Heritage Month is observed every year from September 15 to October 15. In L.A., we have events honoring the cultures, histories and contributions of the Latino community, throughout September, October and beyond. From vibrant festivals and parades, to live performances and hands-on art workshops, here are the best family-friendly ways to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month in L.A. this year.
Plaza West Covina Dia De Los Muertos Celebration
12 p.m. – 2 p.m. Wed., Sept. 3 – Nov. 3 | Plaza West Covina
Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month and Día de los Muertos with a series of events and art installations that honor culture, tradition and unity.
This year’s events include include the Community Ofrenda (Sept. 3-Nov. 3), Bingo Besties: Loteria edition (Sept. 6), Para La Cultura: A Hispanic Heritage Celebration (Sept. 19) and more. More info.
Hola México Film Festival
Fri., Sept. 12 – 20 | Regal LA Live Theater
Founded in 2008, Hola Mexico Film Festival, the largest Mexican Film Festival outside of Mexico, strives to highlight the best and brightest talents in Mexican cinematography. Spanning comedies, dramas, horror films, and documentaries, the festival showcases high-quality films in a festive atmosphere in conjunction with exclusive parties and outdoor concerts.
Screenings and events take place at The Montalbán Theater, Regal LA Live and LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes. More info.
Los Libros Festival
10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Sat., Sept. 13 | Central Library
The 7th annual Los Angeles Libros Festival will offer a full day of entertainment featuring Spanish-language and bilingual storytelling, musical performances, authors, workshops, books, and community. Free and open to the general public. More info.
Fiestas Patrias Festival and Parade
12 p.m. – 11 p.m. Sat., Sept. 13 – 14 | Santa Ana, California
The City of Santa Ana will celebrate Mexican independence and commemorate Santa Ana’s vibrant Hispanic and Latino cultures at the 45th annual Fiestas Patrias festival and parade.
Open to all, the free weekend-long festivities include a parade and street fair, live music, carnival rides and more – all commemorating Mexican independence and celebrating the various Latin American communities that reside throughout Orange County.
The Fiestas Patrias festival will take place on Sept. 13 from 12 p.m. to 11 p.m. and Sept. 14 from 12 p.m. to 10 p.m. in Downtown Santa Ana. More info.
East Los Angeles Mexican Independence Day Parade & Festival
10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Sun., Sept. 14 | East Los Angeles
This vibrant and lively event celebrates Mexico’s independence and culture with a parade featuring floral floats, folklórico dancers, equestrian teams and marching bands starting at 10 a.m. from Cesar Chavez Ave. and Mednik Ave. Following the parade, the festival will be on Mednik and 1st St. with delicious Mexican food, live music, traditional performances, games and activities for the whole family. Fiestas Patrias Family Day
12 p.m. Sun., Sept. 14 | LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes
September 16 marks the beginning of the Mexican War of Independence, and Fiestas Patrias is among the most significant celebrations in Mexican and Mexican-American culture, providing families with an occasion to reaffirm their heritage and identity. Families will enjoy free workshops, guest performers and other kid-friendly activities. Food and beverages will be available. More info.
Zona Libre: A Musical Celebration of Latino LA
3 p.m. – 9:30 p.m. Sun., Sept. 14 | Skirball Cultural Center
Latino LA takes center stage in this powerful, all-ages cultural celebration featuring a Zócalo Public Square conversation with Edgar Barrera and Martha Gonzalez plus live performances by Vivir Quintana, Renee Goust, La Verdad, and DJ Sizzle Fantastic (Cumbiatón). More info.
Travel Mexico: Sun & Moon Folk Art
4 p.m. – 5 p.m. Tue., Sept. 16 | Florence Library
Join a Barnsdall Arts teaching artist in creating your own colorful sun and moon mask inspired by traditional Mexican art. For ages 5 – 12 with parent or caregiver.
This program highlighting sun and moon folk art kicks off the library’s Hispanic Heritage Month Travel Latin America Series! Together the sun and moon symbolize unity, balance, and beauty. The travel series happens Tuesdays, Sept. 16 – Oct. 7. Children will receive a boarding pass and will also get a passport that will be stamped for each event they attend. More info.

The Aquarium of the Pacific will host its twenty-fourth annual Baja Splash Cultural Festival featuring traditional dance, live music, educational programming, and booths from participating organizations. More info.

Fowler Out Loud: Grupo Folklórico de UCLA
6 p.m. Wed., Oct. 8 | The Fowler Museum at UCLA
Grupo Folklórico de UCLA honors the Hispanic Heritage Month with an evening of song and dance. Established in 1966, Grupo Folklórico celebrates Mexican heritage, creates positive Latino/a/x role models, promotes cultural awareness across campus, and encourages Los Angeles youth to embrace their roots and enroll in institutions of higher learning.Fowler Out Loud is an evening concert series that invites UCLA students from various disciplines to perform at the museum. Latino Heritage Festival
5 p.m. – 9 p.m. Sat., Oct. 11 | Pasadena City Hall
This year’s theme is “Un Pasado con Orgullo, un Futuro con Esperanza” (A Proud Past, a Hopeful Future). Sponsored by the City of Pasadena and the Pasadena Latino Heritage Committee, the annual festival will feature live entertainment, children’s activities, food vendors, community resource booths and artisanal marketplace.
