Orange County is just an hour away from Los Angeles, but for Angelenos it often feels like an entirely different world. As someone who grew up in the OC, I love taking day trips with my three kids to introduce them to the places I used to love to frequent — and to discover new ones along the way.
The short distance, combined with tons of family-friendly activities, easy beach access and top-notch food choices, make the OC an ideal day trip for those idle summer days when you’re wondering: “What should I do with the kids today?”
What to Do
Balboa Fun Zone
Take an auto ferry from Newport to Balboa Island to play games at the arcade, take a ride on the Ferris wheel, indulge in sweet treats and, basically, live life like you’re on the boardwalks of yesteryear. balboafunzone.com
Pretend City Children’s Museum

Located in Irvine, little ones will adore this role-playing wonderland dotted with tot-sized replicas of places such as the post office, a movie theater, a farm and even a Trader Joe’s to create an entire mini city. There are costumes, arts and crafts, exhibits and special events to entertain the kids all day long. pretendcity.org
Zoomars at River Street Ranch
We’ve been to several birthday parties here, and it’s always a hit for both kids and adults alike. There are petting zoos, pony rides, mining, a train ride, a playground and even mini tractors and excavators the kids can ride and work on. It’s located in San Juan Capistrano, so you can pair this with a stroll around the famous missions afterward. riverstreetranch.com
Adventure Playground
This vast playground in Irvine has massive Lego blocks, a treehouse, sensory garden, fort zone, mud area and so much more. Just remember to bring a change of clothes, as chances that the kids will get wet or muddy are high. In case they need some quiet time after all the play, the playground is conveniently located right next to a library. cityofirvine.org/parks-facilities/adventure-playground
Whale Watching in Dana Point
As an OC native, I remember seeing whales and dolphins at all times of the year from the beach. Book a boat from a reputable company such as Captain Dave’s Whale & Dolphin Watching Safari for a memorable half day out at sea. dolphinsafari.com
Hit the Beach
Orange County has no shortage of world-renowned beaches — from Crystal Cove State Park to Laguna Beach. Main Beach, the most popular stretch of beach in Laguna, has a playground for kids and easy access to Park Street, which is filled with shops and eateries. And don’t forget the beloved Huntington Pier, which is one of the longest piers on the West Coast and offers panoramic views spanning Catalina Island, Long Beach, San Pedro and Newport Beach.
Where to Eat
Hello Kitty Grand Cafe
ICYMI, America’s only Hello Kitty Cafe is only an hour away. This huge pink wonderland for Sanrio fans young and old is in the Irvine Spectrum Center. Make sure not to miss Hello Kitty’s signature afternoon tea (reservations required) — or just pop in for a coffee and sweets. sanrio.com
Las Brisas
This iconic Laguna Beach restaurant has been around for ages and boasts an amazing weekend brunch with stunning ocean views. Even after I moved up to L.A., my family would meet here regularly for brunch — kids in tow — then head down the hill to Main Beach afterward. lasbrisaslagunabeach.com
La Sirena Grill
This is my go-to for a more casual Laguna Beach lunch option. I used to frequent the tiny cottage La Sirena Grill started in back in the day, and the restaurant has since opened up a much larger outpost, still serving the delicious fresh Mexican food it’s known for. The kids gobble up the carne asada quesadillas while I opt for the filling burritos. lasirenagrill.com
Heritage BBQ
Some claim it’s the best Texas barbecue in California. All I know is it’s melt-in-your-mouth delicious. Just know wait times get long for this Michelin-honored eatery (as in people bring lawn chairs and start camping out in the morning), so you may need to designate a person to wait while the other explores the adorable downtown San Juan Capistrano area. heritagecraftbbq.com
Where to Stay
If you want to make it a staycation instead of driving back in one day, check out some beloved hotels in the area.
Laguna Cliffs Resort & Spa
With close proximity to the Dana Point Harbor and San Juan Capistrano missions, this gorgeous resort is a great home base for exploring southern Orange County. I recently stayed here with my kids, and we spent the day playing on the great lawn, enjoying movie night, swimming and walking to the nearby playground. marriott.com
Courtyard by Marriott Anaheim
If you’re planning a Disney trip, this hotel has spacious rooms for families, a water park in the pool area and, best of all, is a short walk to both Disney entrances. Some rooms even boast a view of Disneyland, so you can watch the nightly fireworks from the comfort of your own room. marriott.com
Hyatt Regency Huntington Beach
Staying here as an L.A. local makes you feel like you’ve traveled to some epic beach vacation without all the travel time. hyatt.com
Waldorf Astoria Monarch Beach

If you really want to splurge, you can’t get better than this stunning resort with generously sized rooms to accommodate families, award-winning dining, three sparkling pools and access to the Monarch Bay Beach Club. waldorfastoriamonarchbeach.com
