WriteGirl, the award-winning creative writing and mentoring organization based in L.A., is seeking volunteers to help nurture the next generation of storytellers.
The nonprofit is looking for women and gender-expansive writers in all genres — fiction, poetry, journalism, screenwriting, songwriting, copywriting, business writing and more — to mentor teen girls and gender-expansive youth. Volunteers don’t need teaching experience; empathy, kindness, good listening skills and a passion for uplifting young voices are the most important qualities.
Mentors support teens in developing their creative writing skills while helping them build confidence, self-expression and a sense of possibility about college and careers. Weekly, monthly and occasional mentoring roles are available, along with opportunities in event support, public relations, fundraising and partnerships. WriteGirl also welcomes men writers to apply for its co-ed Bold Ink Writers programs.
Because WriteGirl is first and foremost a creative writing organization, volunteers must demonstrate strong writing in one or more genres, from fiction, nonfiction and journalism to poetry, screenwriting, comedy, essays and marketing/PR.
Training includes two half-day online orientation sessions, an intake interview and Livescan fingerprinting, along with basic proficiency in email and Zoom. After applications are reviewed, WriteGirl provides scheduling details and onboarding support.
Workshops are primarily online, with several in-person gatherings in Los Angeles, but mentors can join from anywhere in the world.
