Q&A with Dr. Kami Hoss, CEO and founder of SuperMouth, a 2023 NAPPA Award winner
What does “good oral hygiene” mean?
Good oral hygiene is a comprehensive approach to oral health that goes beyond the cleanliness of teeth, gums, tongue and mouth. It’s about maintaining a harmonious balance within the oral microbiome, with a keen understanding of the billions of microbes residing there. It’s crucial to select age-appropriate oral care products that are customized for your child’s individualized needs.
Additionally, adhering to a balanced diet and attending periodic dental check-ups all form the core of oral hygiene. It’s a lifelong practice, and for children, it starts early.
How can parents encourage kids to take care of their whole mouth without constantly nagging?
The challenge of encouraging children to care for their oral health can be met with creativity and enthusiasm. By integrating engaging elements like colorful, child-friendly products, games and rewards, parents can make oral care a positive experience. Our goal is to convert ordinary routines into activities children eagerly anticipate, fostering self-discipline and personal responsibility.
Is good oral hygiene related to other health issues in kids?
Absolutely. Good oral hygiene plays a crucial role in a child’s overall health and development. Poor oral care can result in infections and gum diseases that may hinder a child’s ability to eat, speak and grow properly. These issues can also affect emotional development, sleep quality, academic success, mental health and physical well-being. This ripple effect underscores the importance of oral hygiene as an essential aspect of children’s broader well-being.
What inspired you to launch SuperMouth? Can you also tell us about the company’s mission?
Inspired by my roles as an oral health expert and a father, I saw a need for children’s oral care products that could meet high standards for safety and efficacy. Furthermore, oral care products need to be customized for every child based on their age and stage of development, individualized risk factors and personal preferences, but this approach simply didn’t exist. SuperMouth was born from this need, with a mission to innovate and create enjoyable products that empower children. Our goal extends beyond oral care to building confidence, health, happiness and future success. By creating a robust foundation for oral hygiene, we help children grow with the values and practices that will support them throughout their lives.
What are the most common issues you see in patients?
Common dental problems such as cavities, misaligned teeth, thumb-sucking-related problems and gum diseases frequently stem from inadequate care or misconceptions about oral hygiene. They can usually be addressed or even prevented through proper guidance, early intervention, education and preventive care.
Is there one thing you wished all families knew about oral hygiene?
Oral hygiene is more than a routine; it’s a pivotal aspect of overall health, self-esteem and life quality. It’s not limited to aesthetics, but has profound implications for future well-being.
