This month we have a wonderful roundup of books for young readers that tell magical tales of children overcoming self-doubt, finding their voice and renewed imagination.

Taiwanese-American artist Regina Linke combines traditional Chinese brush painting techniques with digital editing to create the whimsical illustrations in “Big Enough,” an empowering story about a little boy who overcomes fear and self-doubt to become the Oxherd Boy. An origin story of the main character in Linke’s book for adults, “The Oxherd Boy: Parables of Love, Compassion, and Community,” little Ah-Fu must bring the huge family ox home from the woods—if only he can prove to himself that he is big enough for the job. Recommended for ages 4-8.
Graciela in the Abyss

Newberry Medal award-winning author Meg Medina’s middle grade fantasy novel “Graciela in the Abyss” tells the tale of 12-year old Graciela as she navigates her new life as a sea ghost. Spending her days in the ocean welcoming newly awakened sea ghosts, she becomes unlikely allies with 12-year-old mortal Jorge to keep evil spirits from wreaking havoc on both the living and the dead.
