Artist Hervḗ Tullet, bestselling author of “Press Here” (Chronicle Books, 2011) is coming to MOCA and LACMA this month to shake things up, squish stuff together and fire the imaginations of your children while promoting his latest interactive book, “Mix It Up!”
Not familiar with these popular books or the creative mind behind them? Even this adult found it hard to resist the urge to tilt, turn and touch the pages of Tullet’s kid-focused books, which felt like a cross between doing the Cha Cha Slide, playing a game of Twister and seeing the results of a paint ball attack. “Try taking some of that yellow … and smudging it on the red. Great! Can you remember all that? Now let’s have some fun.” It’s an adult-approved invitation to get mixing and messy when Tullet calls the shots. This talented and versatile Parisian is as comfortable designing fabric for Hermès as he is magically melding lively colors that seem to jump off the pages of his books.
Tullet will host a workshop at noon Oct. 11 at The Museum of Contemporary Art (250 S. Grand Ave., L.A.), and another at 12:30 p.m. Oct. 12 at The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (5905 Wilshire Blvd., L.A.). Kids should come prepared to paint. They’ll make a mural under the motivating guidance of the artist and his megaphone.
“Come on! Let’s play!,” says Tullet. “Let’s just have fun together with shapes and colors. It will be really easy, nothing complicated, and even babies can come and play with us. I hope the adults will come to play, too. Everybody should be involved.”
Space may be limited, so get there early. The recommended age is 3 and up and each event is free with admission. Tullet will also be doing an interactive reading from his books, and will be available to sign books after each workshop.
