The big event was the annual Parenting Media Association’s Awards Banquet, held in St. Pete Beach, Florida, on March 1. We were delighted to receive 10 editorial and design awards, including 5 Gold awards. The annual PMA awards ceremony celebrates the best in journalism in family publications around the country.
The PMA received 566 entries for magazine issues and digital products. Professor Reuben Stern oversaw the judging by faculty members at the University of Missouri School of Journalism, one of the most respected journalism programs in the country.
We brought home the Gold for our Inclusive L.A. magazine and Inclusive L.A. Monthly e-newsletter, our #CampReady series, a travel feature on Ojai and a feature article on the importance of optimism for families in the inclusive community.
Our Beyond L.A. travel magazine and our Date with L.A. column won Silver awards. And our Millennial Dad and Doc Talk columns won Bronze.
Here’s a peek at what the critics are saying about us…
Gold: #CampReady: “An impressive amount of research is organized into five in-depth explorations of various summer challenges and options. These are all delivered in straightforward, accessible, informative packages that are as useful as can be.”
Gold: L.A. Parent’s Inclusive L.A: “The subject matter is handled with exuberance. By focusing on the kids, the publication captures a feeling of joy in its stories and photographs, while also providing essential service information and interesting features. The design makes good use of display text and sidebars and lets the people in the photos shine.”
Gold: Ojai Rising: “Descriptive prose really helps the reader see and experience the desert destination of Ojai. Bonus points for a timely feature examining the area’s recovery from the devastating Thomas Fire.”
Gold: The Power of Optimism: “This well-researched, gracefully written piece is full of ideas, guidance and recommendations for parents of children with disabilities. Grounded in recent studies that show the effects of optimism when meeting challenges, the feature provides a series of tools that can be adapted to particular circumstances. What really makes the story shine, however, are the inspiring comments from parents who discovered that optimism is a way to move forward. Their statements give authentic voice to the expert advice.”
Gold: L.A. Parent’s Inclusive L.A. Monthly: “Packaged in a mobile-friendly design, this newsletter features a variety of top stories, including events and family topics, as well as a list of recommended events in activities across the metro area.”
Silver: Beyond L.A: “A well-written, well-researched and fun look at traveling with families from Southern California. A good range of stories covers both day trips and far beyond, including Hawaii.”
