In our land of endless summer, fall is a great time to hit the beach with the family. Pack up the sunscreen and head to one of these beaches along the North Coast of the CA Highway 1 Discovery Route, (H1DR). Each beach community has something unique to offer.
Ragged Point Beach: Â Ragged Point Beach is a remote beach that is just waiting to be discovered. The steep but short journey to the beach at the base of the cliffs will leave you a little out of breath, but one look at the unique black-sand beach will let you know it was worthwhile.
William Randolph Hearst Memorial State Beach: This beach offers ample opportunities to swim, explore, hike and picnic. Check out the many kayak and boogie board rental spots, or bring fishing gear to fish off the pier.
Moonstone Beach Park: Located near Cambria, a picturesque beach town, this beach is scattered with small pebbles that are actually moonstones. You may catch a glimpse of a whale or dolphin here.
Cayucos State Beach: This is the ultimate watersport getaway, with tons of opportunities for surfing, boogie boarding, kayaking and playing in the waves. Check out the new Cayucos Pier and bring your gear to try your hand at fishing off the dock.
Spooner’s Cove Beach:  Located in the Montaña de Oro State Park in Los Osos, this quaint beach is dog friendly. There are ample spots to explore, including tide pools, caves and fun rock formations.
Avila Beach Pier—The Whale Trail: Part of the Whale Trail that runs along Highway 1, this is one of the best places to catch a glimpse of whales and other marine animals. The pier is also bustling with restaurants, shops and popular vacation rentals.
