South Bay Honor Band to Host Music Intensive for Students

By Whitney Levine

Created by Steven Allen Fox, the South Bay Honor Band will host a music intensive, May 16 at Marymount California University, to provide students in 8th through 12th grade with an opportunity to take part in a day of musical experiences with a focus on film, television and video game music as the new “symphonic” music of this generation.

Eligible students will take part in an intensive musical experience under the direction of Maestro Fox, Artistic Director/Conductor of the Golden State Pops Orchestra and Music Director/Conductor of the El Segundo Bands. All students are required to have a teacher recommendation filled out electronically, or a recorded audition submission.

Starting at 10 a.m., the event will include a pizza lunch and conclude with a show-and-tell performance at 5 p.m., in which Fox will share his experience and knowledge with the students. The day will also include ensemble rehearsals, sectionals with professional musicians from the L.A. music scene, and a lecture on a career in music.

Students will participate in large sectionals (woodwinds, brass and percussion) with Los Angeles-based professional musicians and respected educators. In addition, Fox will give a one-hour lecture on the possibilities and planning toward a career in music.

Tickets per student are $125 with pizza lunch included. The event will be located at 30800 Palos Verdes Dr. E. For more information, visit
