4-9:30 p.m. Sept. 6, 9 a.m.-8:30 p.m. Sept. 7-8. The Ocean Institute’s 35th Annual Tall Ships Festival offers an entertaining and educational salute to California’s rich maritime history. Friday night starts off the festivities with a blast during the Cannon Battles from 4:30-8:30 p.m. (they’ll also occur Sat.-Sun.). Weekends mornings begin with the Mermaid Breakfast, where you can enjoy pancakes, do a fun mermaid craft, meet the mermaids and watch them swim underwater (advance reservations are highly recommended). Also on Sat.-Sun., you can take tours of the brig Pilgrim, Spirit of Dana Point, and the visiting vessels (10 a.m.-3 p.m.) that include such activities as squid dissections, gold panning, and candle making. Folks can also attend the Sails ‘n Ales Parties on Friday and Saturday nights (6-9:30 p.m.) that serve up both beer tastings for adults as well as having live music, food trucks and mermaid encounters for all ages to enjoy.
