Manhattan Theatre Club (MTC), in partnership with The League of Live Stream Theater, is offering high school classrooms around the world free access to a recorded performance of “School Girls; Or, The African Mean Girls Play” by Jocelyn Bioh. The special program runs Nov. 2–13.
Directed by Whitney White, the acclaimed play follows Paulina, the queen bee of Aburi Girls Boarding School in Ghana, as she competes to become Miss Ghana 1986. When a new student transfers from America, the competition takes a more personal turn. The play explores beauty, belonging, bullying and the social pressures that influence how young people see themselves and treat others.
The approximately 85-minute performance, presented in English, comes with classroom-ready activities designed to encourage creative thinking, interpretation and meaningful discussion. Students can also explore how their peers in other communities interpret the same production.
Content advisory: The production contains strong language, bullying related to body size, weight and eating, and blood and mild gore.
