September is National Literacy Month, and in addition to running articles on how parents can help improve their children’s literacy skills at home and speech development milestones, we’re excited to see what beloved reading champion LeVar Burton has been up to lately in his journey to get kids reading.

Burton recently teamed up with Osmo from BYJU’s to serve as its chief reading officer. Osmo is an award-winning science, technology, engineering, art and math (STEAM) brand from the global edtech company BYJU’s.

On International Literacy Day (Sept. 8), Burton led a read-along with students at Theodore Roosevelt Elementary School in Burbank. Burton and the 250 students read a book from Osmo’s new Reading Adventure program – a personalized, interactive program developed with educators to build kids’ reading skills and confidence using hands-on learning, digital play and speech recognition technology to cover critical reading skills from kindergarten through first grade. 

Emmy Award-winning Burton’s TV and film legacy includes “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” the ABC miniseries “Roots” and serving as host of the PBS Kids educational television series “Reading Rainbow” for more than 23 years. In his role as chief reading officer, Burton is sharing information with parents and educators on ways to inspire kids to increase their reading time. He will make special appearances to read with kids, families and educators in an effort to reduce the literacy gap.
