April ushers in more than showers — it’s also the most literary month of the year. The fourth month of the year hosts National Poetry Month, World Book Day and Shakespeare’s birthday. April is also when the first dictionary was published (1828) and when the world’s largest library, the Library of Congress was established (1800).

Adding to this illustrious list is a day we’re especially excited about: April 10, which is National Encourage a Young Writer Day — a day when young people are encouraged to write to their heart’s content.

To inspire little ones to put pen to paper, PBS KIDS is sharing activities and resources that inspire us all to get the creative juices flowing. One of the most effective ways to help children become readers and writers is to show them through your own example.

National Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated between Sept. 15 and Oct. 15 to honor the many Latinos who have greatly contributed, influenced and enriched our culture and society. Each year, Hispanic Heritage Month is a time to recognize the history, culture and contributions of more than 54 million U.S. Latinos — a recognition that should last all year, but this period is a great reminder to bring greater awareness into all of our homes and schools.
