Children’s Community School has focused on a quality, progressive education for its students since 1981. CCS’ TK-6th grade program inspires students through subject-integrated, hands-on learning. This approach supports deep understanding and helps students to develop independent thinking, a spirit of innovation and advanced problem-solving skills.
Through every discovery and challenge, CCS students develop a genuine love of learning. Each child has the opportunity to help direct their own learning, as CCS ensures that their students take an active role in their learning. This is accomplished by teaching students a variety of ways to approach problems, and multiple strategies to solve them. This is part of the reason that CCS students graduate as accomplished students, attend the best schools and thrive upon graduation.
Children’s Community School prepares children to be active citizens in a democracy. At every step, CCS connects learning to life itself. The school believes education should empower every student to actively shape both their own future and the future of society. CCS is proud to carry forward John Dewey’s vision, keeping progressive education not just alive, but vibrant and relevant for today’s world. Dewey’s approach emphasizes hands-on, active, experiential learning and self-reflection that moves away from rote memorization and boring lecture-based classroom time. At CCS, learning is driven by student interest and engagement with real-world problems. This allows students to foster practical life skills, critical thinking and democratic participation.
The school has the privilege of welcoming families from across greater Los Angeles. This ensures that the classrooms are made up of a diverse set of children with different backgrounds and interests, creating a vibrant environment for our students to succeed. Students are guided by an excellent teaching staff and leadership: experienced classroom teachers, passionate specialist teachers and a visionary administration. Students enjoy mixed age classrooms that them to progress at their own pace. Those hungry for more advanced schoolwork are provided opportunities, and those who need more time are afforded the space they need to grow. This classroom setup also provides leadership opportunities to the older children, while younger students can directly observe the older students and learn from their example.
CCS also prioritizes out-of-the classroom activities that enhance students’ growth. This includes student-organized clubs and extracurricular sports like basketball, where CCS competes against other area independent schools. But CCS students travel beyond Southern California. The older students have traveled to Washington DC to observe democracy in action. All students take day trips to places like The Natural History Museum and the Long Beach Aquarium to widen their experience-base and expand on the ideas that are taught in the classroom. CCS also has several unique community events that create ways for families to spend time together and give back to our community. One example is Booksgiving, a November event that encourages the exchange and donation of gently used books to neighbors in the surrounding community. Providing new ideas and narratives to growing families and a home for beloved stories, once children have outgrown them.

This year, CCS is proud to announce that it will be creating a new transitional kindergarten program – a wonderful way for your child to become acclimated to an elementary school campus while having dedicated time for free play and exploration. Your young learner will explore art, music, science, math and more, finding joyful ways to explore concepts that they can build on in early elementary and beyond.
CCS incites you to learn more through a campus tour! This is the best way to see firsthand the power of a CCS education.
