This is the story of how a real-life Angeleno dog, Milo, became the inspiration for a new animated series, “Milo’s Adventures.”
Before the 7-year-old Shih-Poo moved to the L.A. area, he suffered a serious dog attack and two bouts of paralysis. Today, though, he is healthy and thriving and spends his days exploring Venice with his owner, Ori Mor. “He’s curious, funny, stubborn and very social,” Mor says. “People smile when they see him, and kids especially seem to connect with him.”
Milo’s resilience and curiosity inspired Mor to create “Milo’s Adventures,” an independent YouTube series for children ages 3–8. The show turns Milo’s neighborhood explorations into lessons about animals, friendship, nature, kindness and curiosity. “The idea really started during our walks around Venice,” Mor says. “Milo notices everything — animals, birds, people, plants, sounds, whatever is happening around us — and I started thinking about how much there is for kids to discover simply by paying attention.
“My time working in the Netflix environment also influenced how I thought about it,” he says. “I wasn’t working creatively on Netflix shows, but being around a company built on storytelling gave me a different appreciation for how a character and a simple idea can grow into a larger world.”
The series, rooted in familiar L.A. settings, follows a simple idea: “Go experience the world, notice what’s around you, learn something about it and find a way to help,” Mor says. Milo’s walks become opportunities for young viewers to slow down, pay attention to the world around them and think about how they can help. In addition, the stories are built around themes of perseverance, empathy and getting back into the world after something difficult happens.
What does real-life Milo do when he sees animated Milo on screen?
“He’ll watch animated Milo on the screen, then look at me and sometimes look back at the screen as if he’s trying to work out what’s going on,” Mor says. “I obviously can’t know what he thinks he’s seeing, but watching the real Milo encounter his animated counterpart is pretty funny.”
